Return to Headingley Deanery

History

The foundation stone was laid on 14th October 1961 by Mary Caroline Moorman, wife of the then Bishop of Ripon.

Bells

A single bell hung for slow swinging.  Taylors cast a 2' diameter bell in September 1961.  It weighed 2-2-24 and sounded the note E.  It was supplied with a trigger action lever clapper and was inscribed JOHN TAYLOR & Co. * FOUNDERS * LOUGHBOROUGH * 1962 *

Unfortunately this bell was cracked in the early 1980s and so a replacement bell was procured.  In July 1985 Taylors supplied a bell originally cast to be the second of six at Aldbury Hertfordshire.  Judging by its weight this bell must have come out too flat for use at Aldbury and was kept as a stock bell until required.  The bell was supplied with "balanced fittings".

Bell Founder Date Cwt-Qtr-Lb Diameter Note
1 John Taylor of Loughborough 1984 3.0.6 25"

Inscription

The bell as cast for Aldbury was inscribed:

JOHN TAYLOR & CO * FOUNDERS * LOUGHBOROUGH * 1984
                              MEMBERS OF ONE ANOTHER
                                      SHEILA AND DAVID
                                                BONSAR
                                               GAVE ME

It is likely that the dedicatory part of the inscription was removed before the bell was installed at Cookridge.
